There are many fantastic spots for gem mining in New York, but just a handful are ideal for what we’re looking for. Some of these areas may not be well-known, yet they frequently provide excellent selections when we’re looking.
Penfield Quarry
Located in Penfield, a suburb of Rochester, the Penfield Quarry has unique terrain and geology. The landscape comprises steep rock walls that reach up to 80 feet in height, as well as flat areas of ground where visitors can walk or explore. The walls are composed of limestone and sandstone that have been weathered over time, creating interesting textures and patterns. Rocks have also fallen from the walls, creating an uneven surface below.
Geologically speaking, the quarry was formed when an underground stream eroded the surrounding sedimentary rock, leaving behind this unique landscape.
