The Best Spots To Find Obsidian in California
California is endowed with great gem mining sites, but not all of them contain Obsidian as well. So we scoured our state to find the spots that you can visit and explore if you’re after this gem, and here are our most favorite ones:

Obsidian Butte
Obsidian Butte is tucked away in the southeastern part of our state, near the Salton Sea. It’s surrounded by vast desert plains, with the Chocolate Mountains in the distance. Its terrain can be a bit challenging but not impossible to treck, with it sandy patches and rocky outcrops.
Once you reach Obsidian Butte, you’ll be greeted by a mesmerizing sight. The butte itself is made up of layers of volcanic rock, including Obsidian. You’ll find the glossy black stone scattered all over the place, glimmering under the sun.
