If you’re looking to find turquoise in Ohio, you’ll need to know exactly where to look. Many beginners waste time searching in the wrong spots, often coming home empty-handed and frustrated.

We’ve done the hard work for you by talking to local collectors and geology experts. After months of research, we’ve put together a list of the most promising locations where you might find turquoise in Ohio.

How Turquoise Forms Here

Turquoise forms through a unique process involving water and minerals. It begins when acidic water seeps into the ground, moving through rocks that contain copper and aluminum.

As this water interacts with these minerals, it breaks them down and allows the copper and aluminum to combine with phosphorus, creating turquoise.

This usually happens in shallow areas, often less than 20 meters deep, where the environmental conditions are just right. 

This mineral typically fills cracks and cavities in rocks, often in dry, desert-like areas. The presence of iron can also influence its color, giving it beautiful shades of blue and green.

Kingman Turquoise

Kingman Turquoise showcases a vibrant range of colors from pale green to deep “high blue.” Its matrix patterns can include white, light brown, or black veining, setting it apart from other turquoise types.

This stone is often stabilized to enhance its durability and color, allowing for broader use in jewelry making. The natural Kingman turquoise typically presents a medium blue hue with a water web matrix.

Kingman Turquoise is recognized as one of the most sought-after American turquoise. Its consistent supply has made it a staple in Native American jewelry and artisan crafts, contributing to its ongoing popularity.

Carico Lake Turquoise

Carico Lake Turquoise is known for its clear robin’s egg blue to vibrant lime green colors. It often features a unique spider-web matrix in brown or, more rarely, black, adding texture and shine to the stone.

What makes this stone special is its high zinc concentration, which gives it an electric lime-green hue. This color is both rare and desirable among turquoise varieties.

Gem-quality Carico Lake Turquoise is scarce, making up less than 3% of the mine’s annual output. This rarity, combined with its natural beauty, makes it a prized item for collectors and enthusiasts alike.

Morenci Turquoise stands out with its deep blue color, a result of its high copper content.

This stone is no longer mined, making it rare and highly collectible. All available Morenci Turquoise comes from mining operations that stopped in 1984.

Tips on where to look

Once you get to the places we have listed below there are some things you should keep in mind when you’re searching:

Riverbeds

Look for turquoise in riverbeds. Over time, water flow can expose hidden stones.

Sediment may hold the gems you’re after. Be prepared to dig through gravel and dirt to find them.

Abandoned Mines

Old mines can be treasure troves for turquoise. These sites often have loose rocks where turquoise might be hiding.

Always be careful while exploring abandoned areas, though.

Hillsides

Flint Ridge

Flint Ridge spans ten miles across eastern Licking County and western Muskingum County in Ohio. The 533-acre Flint Ridge Ancient Quarries & Nature Preserve protects this area where Native Americans mined flint for thousands of years.

The ridge formed about 300 million years ago when this area was under a shallow ocean. The site is most famous for its rainbow-colored flint, which comes in shades of red, blue, green, and white.

Today, you can explore the old quarry pits while hiking the preserve’s trails. The best places to look for turquoise and other rocks are in areas where erosion has exposed the bedrock.

While mainly known for flint, the area’s unique geology also makes it interesting for finding other minerals in the exposed rock layers.Seneca Caverns

Seneca Caverns

Seneca Caverns sits in northeastern Seneca County, Ohio, just outside the small town of Flat Rock. The caverns formed millions of years ago from Columbus Limestone and Lucas Dolomite.

The cave system drops seven levels deep, reaching 110 feet underground. A clear underground stream called Ole Mist’ry River flows through the bottom level.

The Chestnut Room, stretching 250 feet, is the biggest room in the caverns and shows off amazing rock formations.

While looking for turquoise, the Fossil Room (30 feet down) and Chert Alley (55 feet down) are great spots to explore. The cave walls show interesting patterns from years of water flow, making it easier to spot mineral deposits.

Hocking Hills State Park

Hocking Hills State Park sits in southeast Ohio near Logan, about an hour from Columbus. This 2,000-acre park features deep caves, waterfalls, and towering cliffs that make it one of Ohio’s most visited natural areas.

While looking for turquoise, focus on the areas around Old Man’s Cave and Cedar Falls. These spots have exposed rock layers where minerals often collect. The natural hollows and rock shelters throughout the park are good places to search too.

Besides possible turquoise, visitors often find quartz crystals and interesting pieces of sandstone with unique patterns.

The park has over 25 miles of hiking trails that take you past rock formations and waterfalls. Rock Bridge Trail and Hemlock Bridge Trail are great spots to start your search.

Lake Erie Shoreline

The Lake Erie Shoreline runs along Ohio’s northern edge, spanning several counties like Lorain, Cuyahoga, and Ashtabula. This stretch of land meets one of North America’s Great Lakes and has some interesting rocks and minerals.

One cool thing about this shoreline is its beach ridges. These old beaches are now found miles away from the current lake, showing where Lake Erie’s water level used to be long ago. The area also has big sandstone quarries in Amherst and salt mines in Cuyahoga County.
