Tips on Where to Look

Labradorite isn’t super common in everyday places, but with some smart searching, you can find it. Here’s where you should look:

Metamorphic Rock Formations

Look for dark-colored rock outcrops. Spot areas with lots of feldspar minerals. Check exposed cliff faces. Sometimes, when the sun hits just right, you might catch that signature blue flash from larger formations that’s a dead giveaway for labradorite presence.

Glacial Deposits

Gloucester

Gloucester is a coastal city in northeastern Massachusetts, about 30 miles from Boston. It sits on Cape Ann, facing Massachusetts Bay, and is famous for its rocky shores and maritime history.

Labradorite has been found in this area, hidden within the ancient granite bedrock that forms much of Cape Ann. The region’s rocks were created millions of years ago by volcanic activity and later shaped by massive glaciers during the ice age.

The best places to search for labradorite in Gloucester are along the rocky outcrops near the shoreline and in some of the old quarries that dot the area. These quarries once supplied granite for buildings across America but now offer treasure-hunting opportunities for rockhounds.

Cape Ann’s unique geology creates perfect conditions for finding not just labradorite but other interesting minerals too. When visiting, check the rocky beaches after storms, when waves might expose new specimens.

Salem

Salem in Essex County offers rockhounds a chance to discover labradorite amid its famous witch trial landmarks. Few people realize that Salem’s geological treasures match its rich historical significance.

Salem’s special Gabbro-Diorite formation creates a unique mineral hunting ground unlike other Massachusetts locations. Collins Cove hides small labradorite pockets in its darker stones. Winter Beach reveals occasional specimens where waves have exposed fresh rock faces.

Check the darker igneous outcrops where light catches the distinctive shimmer. The Essex Peabody Museum displays excellent local samples for reference before your hunt. Some Salem quarries that provided stone for the city’s oldest buildings still contain untouched labradorite specimens.

Deerfield River
