This guide will take you through the best garnet hunting spots across Colorado. We’ll cover both easy-to-reach areas and some off-the-beaten-path locations. All you need is a bit of knowledge about where to look and what to look for.

How Garnet Forms Here

Garnet forms deep underground when rocks get squeezed and heated during metamorphism. Think of it like baking cookies – but instead of dough, you’ve got minerals like aluminum, iron, and silica getting cooked under intense pressure.

When these minerals reach temperatures around 400-700°C, they start rearranging their atoms into garnet’s distinctive crystal structure.

To increase your chances of finding garnets, focus your search on these favorable areas:

Metamorphic Rock Outcrops

Look for dark-colored metamorphic rocks, especially schist and gneiss. These rocks often have visible layers or bands.

Garnets appear as dark red or brownish-red crystals embedded in the rock. Common near hiking trails and road cuts where metamorphic rocks are exposed.

Stream Beds & Gravel Banks

Check gravel deposits in streams, especially after heavy rains. Garnets are heavier than most minerals, so they concentrate in stream bends where water slows down.

Use a pan or sieve to sort through the gravel, keeping an eye out for the distinctive reddish crystals that glimmer when wet.

Pegmatite Areas

Ruby Mountain

Ruby Mountain is a light-colored rocky hill near Nathrop. It formed about 30 million years ago when hot molten rock called rhyolite pushed up through older granite. This special rock has tiny holes or “vugs” where minerals grew as the rock cooled.

Garnet crystals can be found inside these small holes throughout the rhyolite. Most garnets here are small, about the size of a grain of rice, and have a deep red color. The best spots to hunt for garnets are on the eastern slopes, as the western side is private property.

Many rockhounds search the broken rocks at the base of cliffs where pieces have fallen down over time. Ruby Mountain also offers other treasures like topaz crystals and obsidian nodules called “Apache Tears.”

The mountain’s unique geology makes it a popular spot for mineral collectors who carefully break open the rhyolite to find the tiny garnets hidden inside.

Sedalia Mine

Sedalia Mine lies about four miles from Salida. This historic site operated from 1881 to 1918, producing copper, zinc, lead, silver, and gold. Today, it attracts mineral enthusiasts for its remarkable almandine garnets.

The mine sits within ancient rocks that were once sea sediments, now transformed by intense heat and pressure. These metamorphic rocks include special types called garnet-cordierite-amphibole gneiss and garnetiferous quartz-mica schist.

Almandine garnets here can grow incredibly large. Their well-formed dodecahedral shapes make them prized specimens.

Collectors often search the mine’s waste dumps and slopes where weathering has exposed these gems. Particularly productive areas include the ground south of the No. 2 adit portal and sections with pegmatite intrusions.

Jefferson Area

Jefferson County stretches along the eastern edge of the Rocky Mountains in Colorado. This area serves as a bridge between the Great Plains and the mountains, creating diverse landscapes from gentle foothills to steep terrain.

Adventurous collectors sometimes check abandoned mining sites in the region, which have historically produced garnet specimens. The area is also famous for topaz, amazonite, and smoky quartz.

Willow Creek

Willow Creek runs for about 35 miles through Grand County in Colorado. It starts in the Arapaho National Forest and flows into Willow Creek Reservoir before joining the Colorado River near Granby. The creek winds through peaceful meadows and thick forests, making it less crowded than many rockhounding spots.

The land around Willow Creek contains a mix of metamorphic and igneous rocks. Granite intrusions and pegmatite veins cut through the older rocks, creating mineral-rich areas. Years of water flow have carved the creek bed, sometimes exposing gemstones and minerals to eager rockhounds.
