Tips on Where to Look
Fire agate is found in areas with past volcanic activity. These beautiful stones typically form in volcanic regions where silica-rich solutions filled cavities in rocks. Here’s where you should start looking:
Volcanic Rock Formations

Look for areas with basalt or other volcanic rocks. The stone usually forms in gas pockets within these rocks. Check dark-colored, rough-textured rocks that seem bubbly or have lots of holes.
Areas where you spot chunks of obsidian are also promising, since both stones form in similar conditions.

Black Hills Rockhound Area

The Black Hills Rockhound Area sits about 18 miles north of Safford. This public collecting site is managed by the Bureau of Land Management specifically for rock collectors.
Volcanic activity 24 to 36 million years ago created perfect conditions for fire agate formation here. When the volcanoes cooled down, silica and iron-rich solutions filled holes in the lava and slowly turned into the colorful fire agates we find today.
The landscape features gentle hills and dry washes where gemstones often hide. Walking across from the main parking area is one of the best spots to search, the slopes and washes here regularly reveal new specimens after rain.
Many collectors bring small tools to dig into the hillsides, which often conceal hidden agate deposits. Besides fire agate, you might also find chalcedony and quartz crystals while exploring this desert treasure spot.
Joy Valley

Joy Valley lies in southeastern Graham County, about 2-3 miles east-southeast of Chaney Place. This unique area features a small river that flows year-round through the major valley, unusual for Arizona’s typically dry landscape.
The valley sits at the base of basalt mountains with high desert plains spreading around it. The nearby Pinaleño Mountains, including Mount Graham (10,720 feet tall), make an impressive backdrop for rockhounding adventures.
During the Tertiary Period, volcanic activity created perfect conditions for fire agate formation here. Hot mineral-rich fluids filled cracks in volcanic rocks, eventually cooling to form the gemstones.
White chalcedony with a bubbly appearance often appears alongside fire agate in this area. The best hunting grounds are south of the cattle guard on BLM land, where a broad plain covered with dark volcanic rocks holds hidden treasures.
Black Mountains

The Black Mountains stretch about 75 miles along the eastern shore of the Colorado River in Mohave County. These mountains form a natural border in the southwestern part of the county with their rugged terrain and steep cliffs.
Ancient Precambrian gneiss, schist, and granite make up much of the range, covered by younger volcanic and sedimentary rocks. This complex geology created perfect conditions for various minerals, including fire agate.
The Oatman Mining District within these mountains is especially known for quality fire agate specimens. Specifically, the Oatman Fire Agate claims (also called Cuesta claims) have produced some of the best samples.

Slaughter Mountain

Slaughter Mountain rises 6,556 feet high in the Gila Mountains of Graham County. It stands as the highest peak in this mountain range and belongs to the Lone Star Mining District. People also call this area the Safford or Dos Pobres Mining District.
The mountain consists mainly of volcanic rocks formed during the Tertiary period. These include andesite lava flows and rhyolite ash layers. Over millions of years, hot water carrying minerals moved through these rocks, leaving behind various gemstones.
Fire agate hunters find the most success in places where andesite bedrock shows at the surface. The upper slopes and summit area have historically produced high-quality fire agate specimens. Natural erosion on the lower slopes and foothills also helps expose new pieces.
